University of Alabama Birmingham Civitan International Research Center Sparks Clinics offers an Augmentative-Alternative Communication (AAC) Clinic which provides assessments and consultation services to individuals with complex communication needs.The Civitan-Sparks Clinics have been providing services for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families for 40 years. Customized team evaluations are available to address the areas of concern. During an AAC evaluation, an individual will see a speech-language pathologist with expertise in the area of AAC as well as a social worker; depending on the person's needs, he or she may also be seen by an audiologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist, psychologist, vision specialist, etc. During the assessment process, families receive information about strengths/needs and recommended approaches and materials, as well as information about local resources.
