Augmentative-Alternative Communication (AAC) Alphabet Board

Augmentative-Alternative Communication (AAC) Alphabet Board
Alphabet boards are simple, "no-tech" augmentative-alternative communication (AAC) "must have" tools for all speech-language pathologists working with individuals with complex communication needs. Alphabet boards can be used by nonspeaking individuals who have relatively strong literacy and spelling skills and are able to point directly to the letters on the board (i.e., direct selection) to spell out their message. This sample alphabet board includes a space button to indicate the space between words, numbers, "yes/no" (for those who do not have a reliable signal for "yes/no") and "I’ll start over" for times when the message is not clear.

For individuals who are not able to use direction selection (i.e., point directly to the alphabet board) adaptations may be made to the board so it can be used with an eye gaze frame or partner assisted scanning may be used to facilitate access to the board.
